About Us

LFK Pride is a community-based organization of sexual and gender minorities living in Lawrence, Kansas. Founded on January 13, 2019 the group came together as the result of a Facebook Event with the goal of Visioning a community center that serves the LGBTQ+ population of Lawrence, KS and beyond to the rest of Douglas County.

LFK Pride is an inclusive queer and trans organization — rooted in Black Feminist and Disability Justice theory and practice — that centers the needs and narratives of Black, Brown, and Indigenous people, other people of color, nonbinary people, women, femmes, and people with disabilities. Our mission is to build intergenerational and intercultural community through education, activism, and the arts. As organizers, we share the future goal of creating a multi-purpose LFK Pride Center in Lawrence.

At present, we are organizing our first event — LFK Pride Arts Fest — to coincide with Christopher Street Liberation Day and the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising in June 2019 in addition to some community building events leading up to and after Pride. We aim to make our events as inclusive as possible with regards to accessibility beyond just the physical but also the mental and emotional accessibility that is sometimes lacking in LGBTQ+ community events.
